A regional hub for South Africa’s economy and manufacturing, Gauteng province is a major contributor to the economic output and manufacturing sector. The Gauteng provincial government’s strategy is to provide infrastructure, capacity, and linkages at its various development centres while the IDC, through this regional office, will be on hand to provide finance, as well as business and technical support.

 

Aligned to the IDC’s mandate and the province’s key focus areas, this regional office continues to prioritise the manufacturing sectors that include the chemical & medical products, tourism, automotive and transport services, food and beverages ( e.g. processing and packaging of meat, fruit and vegetables; establishment of pack houses) as well as the information technology and communications sectors.

Opportunities in the region?

The IDC Gauteng Regional Office have identified the following key areas of focus in terms of pipeline development, partnerships, and customer service.

  • Work closely with our SBUs to strengthen the participation of SMEs in value chains by forging linkages between large IDC clients and SMEs in our portfolio, specifically to facilitate market access for existing IDC SMEs.
  • Establish relationships with SME Trade Links as a vehicle to source potential fundable clients.
  • Form partnerships with reputable business incubators for pipeline development.
  • Establish and actively participate in investment-readiness workshops to ensure that SMEs receive the necessary assistance before applying for funding.
  • Continuously strive to be customer centric by providing timeous feedback, advocating for efficiencies to improve customer journey.

What is your regional focus areas?

  1. To limit or minimize the frustrations from both financiers like the IDC and entrepreneurs/clients, it is important for clients to familiarize themselves with information requirements of financiers. This will eliminate the back-and-forth of requesting additional information and shorten the time taken to assess the funding enquiries.
  2. Provide a succinct business plan that clearly articulates your company background, funding need, technical capability, revenue/sales drivers, and development impact.
  3. Key for applicants to know and address in their business plans is – who will buy their products, why will they buy the products and how they will you get the products to the customers –  and most importantly, what, and how they will do it better than their  competitors. This offers financiers comfort around the entities ability to generate revenues/sales and profits to afford the loan.

What are your top three tips for someone applying for finance?

  1.
