Sustainable Industrial Development
The IDC’s response to climate change goes beyond its role in the JET.
To fulfil its industrial development mandate in the context of climate change, the Corporation has adopted an integrated sustainable industrialisation model that allows it to design enabling solutions that are able to transform productive sectors of the economy in a manner that promotes socially inclusive growth for low carbon transitions.
This integrated model allows the IDC to internally coordinate its decisions and facilitate partnerships with investors, technology owners and other stakeholders to drive sustainable industrial development in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The IDC recognises that an energy transition on its own may lead to a negative net impact on the economy and thus seeks to align the energy transition with a transition of production sectors.
IDC’S SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS
IDC’s sustainable industrial development pathways sets out the Corporation’s approach to navigating the tensions between industrial development and climate change. It highlights the progress made to-date and shares the priorities going forward. The IDC recognises the importance of partnerships with funders, industry, technology owners, policy makers and other stakeholders in achieving a successful transition for the South African economy that fosters shared economic prosperity at lower GHG emissions. The IDC is sharing its approach as a foundation for fostering partnerships.
