11 May Veterans Shakeel Meer and William Smith bow out of IDC
Shakeel Meer and William Smith have retired from the IDC after serving the Corporation for three decades, respectively.
Until his retirement on 30 April 2021, Shakeel Meer was the Divisional Executive for Manufacturing. He joined the IDC 30 years ago and rose through several ranks to serve as Divisional Executive for Corporate Strategy as well as for Chemicals and Textiles, before assuming the Divisional Executive for Manufacturing position. Shakeel held the distinction of being one of the few black professionals at the IDC three decades ago and was an activist for change within the organisation. Renowned for a strategic eye and a penchant for detail,
Shakeel’s in-depth and detailed comments on submissions impacted many colleagues and grounded their professional development. Shakeel certainly left a lasting legacy at the IDC.
William Smith, who joined the IDC 27 years ago, was the Divisional Executive for Agro-Industries and Small Business Finance. When he was Head of the Auto sector, he facilitated BAIC entrance, one of the first large auto assembly plants in decades to set up a plant in the Coega IDZ. While he served in the Operations Division, William is remembered for helping to instill a continuous culture of improvement in the quality of dealmaking activities.
