04 Oct IDC unveils impactful study on NEV value chain at Smarter Mobility Africa
Johannesburg – As part of its commitment to enhancing innovative solutions in the transport sector, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) yesterday unveiled the outcomes of a study which revealed several economic opportunities in the New Electric Value (NEV) value chain.
The study was undertaken in partnership with local research group AIH. The objectives of the study among others was to explore localisation opportunities within the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) value chain, with a specific focus on logistics, last-mile delivery, mining, machinery and equipment, agriculture, tourism, associated infrastructure and components.
Ahead of the launch of the outcomes of the study, Acting IDC Divisional Executive for Mining, Metals, Infrastructure and Energy (MMIE), Rian Coetzee disclosed that the IDC is investing in localisation and NEV technology with the objective of developing a sustainable transport infrastructure that can drive job creation, decarbonisation and support industrial development. This reflects the Corporation’s strategy to position South Africa as a leader in the sustainable mobility sector and support value-creation industries.
“The potential for the NEV value chain to create employment opportunities is significant as confirmed by outcomes of this study,” said Coetzee.
Speaking at the Smarter Mobility Africa summit at which the IDC unveiled outcomes of this study, Nathan Fredericks, who is a Senior Industry Development Planner at the IDC said that one of the most salient outcomes of the study showed that the NEV ecosystem had massive potential to contribute to Africa’s economic growth while promoting sustainability.
“Local industries can be developed and integrated into the NEV supply chain, thereby boosting the local economy, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the resilience of the continent’s transport networks. We need to start encouraging adoption of NEV’s at a faster pace than currently, because sustainable transportation is the future,” said Fredericks.
