13 May IDC Aides School After School Feeding Scheme Supplies Theft
Gqeberha, Eastern Cape: Just over 800 pupils from Joubert Primary School in Schauderville, will once again start receiving their daily meals after this service was halted when their school’s Feeding Scheme were cleaned out during a burglary in February. Thieves made off with an entire school terms’ worth of food items that were part of their National School Nutrition Programme supplies.
After reading an article about the dire position the school was faced with, The IDC partnered with their long-standing collaborator, Love Story, to supply the school with meals for a term. “We were moved by the article and tapped into our relationship with Love Story to see how we could come to the school’s aide to temporarily assist them and ensure that the pupils who depend on these meals are not stranded,” says Tebogo Molefe, the IDC’s CSI Manager.
Love Story is a non-profit organisation that was founded in 2012 by Luke and Elaine Watson. What started off as a small soup kitchen in the city centre has grown over the years into a multi-faceted organisation that runs a variety of poverty alleviation projects in and around Gqeberha.
“Assisting those who are destitute has always been close to our hearts, and we are grateful for partnerships such as those with the IDC as we can reach out to even more people through our efforts,” says Elaine Watson.
Due to the socio-economic background of the parents of the learners who are attending the school, the two meals offered by the school has been the only meals most of the learners receive.
“We package the surplus of the daily cooked meals and send those home with some of our learners who need it the most to benefit their families,” adds Mervin January Principle of Joubert Primary School.
The school does not have the money to replace the stolen food as they have already used their allocated budget to buy food for the kids.
