South Africa celebrates Tourism Month

tourismA world-class view of Cape Town for the world traveller

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in South Africa is expected to increase in the coming years, thanks, in large part to the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and the positive feedback from the football fans.

During the football spectacle, the country was marketed as a ‘must-see’ destination.

IDC projects

As far as the Industrial Development Corporation is concerned, the potential for an increase in tourist numbers is significant.

The New Growth Path highlights tourism as central to job creation and aims to remove some of the obstacles to the growth of tourism industry.

In line with some of the objectives of the National Tourism Sector Strategy announced in 2010, the IDC will focus on following key areas:

  • Improving the geographic and rural spread of tourism activities by proactively exploring opportunities in the underdeveloped areas;
  • Diversifying activities from pure accommodation-based developments by looking at opportunities in niche areas, including adventure and sports tourism, theme parks and other attractions and the backpackers sector;
  • Pursuing opportunities in the rest of Africa, including world class business hotels in fast growing business nodes in East and West Africa, establishment and refurbishment of tourism facilities in SADC and game lodges in East Africa.

Some of the projects that the IDC is currently looking at are:

  • Beach tourism resort in KwaZulu-Natal;
  • Kite surfing facility in the Western Cape; and
  • An extreme sport facility in the Northern Cape.

These types of projects tie in with the IDC’s mandate to be proactive in creating new industries, according to the corporation’s divisional executive of the services sector, Katinka Schumann.

They will also be a boost for economic development in the specific province.
