Agency Development and Support

Rural Development Initiative

The Rural Development Initiative was established to help eradicate hunger and poverty in rural areas through creating farming initiatives that encourage households to produce and procure their own food.

It is a collaborative poverty alleviation and job creation effort involving the Presidency, the national Economic Development Department and various KwaZulu-Natal provincial government departments.

As part of this initiative, the IDC's Agency Development and Support department is resuscitating a community dairy farming project located in the uMlalazi Traditional Community. The grant funding of R1.2-million will go towards starting the project and providing the necessary support for operations.

The Rural Development Initiative (RDI) was prompted by the communities of Mbongolwane and approved by the uMlalazi Traditional Authority in 2010. The project involves several activities, including animal husbandry and farming of maize, beans and vegetables.

In 2011, it identified a dairy farming project as a potential poverty alleviation and job creation venture and, after several engagements with the community, ADS agreed to help by providing funds to establish the dairy farming project. It is expected to provide 200 jobs for local people.

Besides the dairy project, ADS has identified a number of potential economic opportunities in the area. These include:

  • Agriculture
    • Large scale communal-based farming
    • Agro-processing industries
  • Tourism
    • Qhudeni forests
    • Cultural and historical points of interest
    • Amatshenezimpisi Nature Reserve
