Community of Practice

With more than 30 development agencies established with the Industrial Development Corporation's support, there is a large amount of good practice, project examples and experiences spread across the country, but limited interaction, information-sharing and networking takes place between those involved

    Agency Development and Support

To create a platform for these agencies to interact and share information, the IDC joined forces with the South African Local Economic Development Network to establish a Community of Practice (CoP).

CoP functions as a reservoir of information shared by development agencies funded and supported by the IDC's Agency Development and Support department. It also brings together agencies from urban and rural areas.

The web-based platform enables development agencies around the country to share information of common interest, so helping to support the growth of local economies. Specifically, the platform helps agencies set up administrative systems, access relevant documents and simplify ways to get funding for projects, among other things.

Launched by the IDC in the district of Umkhanyakude in KwaZulu-Natal in May 2012, CoP's objectives are "people centred" and targeted to respond to individual and community needs and circumstances as follows:

  • People connected and interacting around common issues;
  • People networked and sharing good – and sometimes bad – practice and experiences;
  • People informed of local economic development tools and training opportunities;
  • People equipped and supported to respond to their specific needs and situations; and,
  • People acknowledged through publication of their articles, success stories and case studies.

The CoP platform focuses on technical training and mentorship of champions from various development agencies. Membership of this professional group is restricted, but a wide range of information is publicly available on the South African Local Economic Development Network website. Interested members can email Veron Vukeya on or the network team on to receive access.
