!Khi Solar One

Once completed, this concentrated solar tower power station will be one of the largest in the world. One of the benefits of this project relative to most other renewable energy projects is its ability to store energy and to deliver electricity to the grid during peak times.

Satisfying customers

Products and funds

The IDC provides financial assistance for the development of new business, expansions or rehabilitation of existing businesses. The business case must exhibit economic merit (i.e. it must be profitable). IDC considers the cash-flow of a company and the financial forecasts to demonstrate economic viability and profitability within a reasonable period and sufficient cash flows to repay the investment over a reasonable period of time.

The IDC finances fixed assets and the fixed portion of growth in working capital requirements. Funding can be structured utilising a wide array of instruments including: debt, equity, quasi-equity, guarantees, trade finance, bridging finance, venture capital and project funding.

IDC portfolio exposure to debt, equity and guarantees at cost is indicated below:
Product   31 March 2013
31 March 2013
% of exposure
31 March 2012
31 March 2012
% of exposure
Debt   17 937.5   37   15 895.2   41
Equity   29 334.1   60   21 553.9   55
Guarantees   1 242.7   3   1 441.1   4
Total   48 514.3      38 890.2

The funding is structured in a way that will suit the business’ needs most appropriately.

Structuring options include: funding term (short, medium and long-term loans) and payment holidays to allow for periods upfront where no payments need to be made on either capital or interest.

A far greater emphasis is placed on the proactive development of projects and this has led to a much improved project pipeline during the past financial year.

Coega Dairy Holdings

The IDC has identified increased competition in the dairy value chain and import substitution in the cheese industry as key sector development goals. We also singled out the need for increased farmer (and specifically B-BBEE) participation in dairy value-adding initiatives.

Windtown Lagoon Resort

The newly built Windtown Lagoon Resort and Spa reflects the IDC’s focus to funding community-based projects that have potential to create employment opportunities in far-flung regions.
