An experts’ consultation on the Interface between Mining and Manufacturing was held at the IDC on 22 August 2013. The forum was co-hosted by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA). The forum also benefitted from the support of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), BHP Billiton and the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

The meeting was a follow up to the experts consultation on the Minerals Beneficiation meeting that took place in October 2012. The 2012 meeting established a valuable platform for further consideration of this much underrated issue and received substantial coverage in the specialised media, which added to the momentum.

The August 2013 meeting had the following objectives:

  • To ascertain the extent of the interface between mining and manufacturing in South Africa;
  • To exchange experiences through case studies from different sectors, focusing on obstacles and solutions; and
  • To debate the practical implementation of government policies in respect of beneficiation.

The meeting brought together experts in the fields of Mining, Manufacturing, Business, Government, Metallurgy, Academia and Labour to develop a systematic view based on experience and knowledge.
