Congratulations to the Industrial Development Corporation’s Research and Information department, who have won the award for the Economist of the Year.

The announcement was made at the Thomson Reuters Economist of the Year 2013 function held on 9 April 2013.

The macroeconomics team of the IDC’s Research and Information department scooped the award from 18 competitors as its overall set of forecasts were consistently the most accurate or the closest to the actual economic data for last year.

“We are extremely proud to have won this prestigious award, especially in light of the high calibre of our competitors,” says Jorge Maia, head of the department.

“When making forecasts, our team examines the economic fundamentals and underlying factors, whilst not losing sight of the broader picture, and we are not easily swayed by consensus viewpoints.

“The award puts IDC in the spotlight as more attention will in future be paid to our forecasts, which are published internally as well as externally on a quarterly basis. The Thomson Reuters award encompasses a set of economic indicators and therefore it is highly motivating to see our efforts recognised in this manner”.

The team of macroeconomists consists of Jorge Maia, Gerhard Kuhn, Nico Kelder and Likeleli Makaulule.

We wish them continued success in the art of making economic forecasts.
