Chemicals and Allied Industries

chemicalsSupporting projects that develop new industries

The Chemicals and Allied Industries Strategic Business Unit concerns itself with investments in business ventures and projects in a number of chemical industry sub-sectors: from large industrial upstream and basic chemicals to cosmetics and detergents; from glass, plastic and rubber products to fine and speciality chemicals. We also focus on ceramic, stone and concrete products.

We are interested in funding scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies for projects that have the potential to develop new industries or to lead to the expansion of existing ventures. We also support projects that are geared towards replacing the need to import materials.

We help by financing fixed assets and the fixed portion of growth in working capital requirements, or supporting technological upgrades to improve competitiveness.

Who should apply for finance?

Entrepreneurs who have developed a business proposal for the expansion of an existing manufacturing business or for the establishment of a new (greenfields) manufacturing venture in our key sub-sectors should apply for investment.

Promoters or sponsors in need of a partner to develop medium to large scale projects that will have a significant industrial and socio-economic impact on the chemicals industry are also urged to consider applying to the IDC for support.

Funding criteria

In assessing the suitability of an application, we take into consideration:

  • The business venture or project must exhibit economic merit in terms of profitability and sustainability;
  • Shareholders and owners must make a reasonable contribution to the business venture which will be evaluated at the time of the application;
  • Compliance with international environmental standards;
  • The business venture or project should have a significant socio-economic impact such as job creation potential, value addition to raw materials, rural development, empowerment and township development; and
  • Security, the form and nature of which must be related to your specific circumstances.

Applying for funding

We consider each application carefully.

In addition to the specific requirements of the Chemicals and Allied Industries Strategic Business Unit, applications must meet the IDC's minimum requirements.
