The Chemicals and Allied Industries SBU intends to support and promote entrepreneurship, industrial development and strategic partnerships by building competitive industries and enterprises in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The SBU is actively increasing the IDC’s exposure to this industry in view of the perceived future potential of the industry as a significant job creator and source of foreign exchange. The SBU comprises a team of dedicated professionals who have built up an industry-wide network and sound understanding of the dynamics at play.
The Metal, Transportation and Machinery Products SBU aims to develop and support viable downstream metal producers. The SBU provides financing for enterprises in specific manufacturing sectors, including basic iron and steel, casting/foundries, structural and other fabricated metals, machinery, the full value chain of the automotive sector (including components, parts and accessories) and other transport products, including rail transport, the aviation industry and ship as well as boat building.
The Wood and Paper Industries SBU aims to stimulate the forest products sector within southern Africa through partnerships with entrepreneurs in emerging industries. The SBU provides financing for enterprises in areas including forestry, sawmilling, wood chipping for export, poles and the manufacture of veneers, plywood, particle board, wooden containers, structural products, laminated board, wooden furniture, doors and many other wooden products. In the paper industries, we support enterprises which manufacture pulp and paper, paperboard and corrugated packaging products and other paper products.
The 2010! And Construction SBU is headed by Sicelo Sikakane; its main focus it to channel funds to economically viable industries or businesses directly related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™ through the relevant units within the IDC and also funds directly companies in the Construction sector, specifically small to medium enterprises, including providing bridging finance and revolving credit.
The Techno Industries SBU aims to support investments in technology intensive companies. The SBU provides financing to enterprises in the information technology, telecommunications, electronics and electrical industries. The focus is on providing growth capital to companies with proven technology and an established customer base in a high-growth market segment.
The Textiles and Clothing SBU intends to stimulate development and sustainable global competitiveness in the Southern African textile industries. This will help not only to maintain existing employment, but also to create new job opportunities. The SBU actively seeks opportunities in this industry in view of the value of the industry as a significant job creator. The SBU comprises a team of dedicated professionals who have built up an industry-wide network and sound understanding of the dynamics at play.
The Healthcare and Education SBU aims to support and develop businesses in the healthcare and education sectors in southern Africa. The SBU provides financing to enterprises in the healthcare sector relating to manufacturing; practice activities; administration and management and medical services. In the education sector, finance is provided to educational institutions; learnership administration companies; corporate training service providers; special education and training of the mentally retarded; other educational services such as own tutoring, dancing, music and sports schools, life skills and educational programmes.
The Transportation, Financial Services & Other SBU aims to improve the road, rail, air and maritime transport services surrounding industrial goods and movement of commuters in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The SBU also focuses on the Financial Services sector with specific reference to Micro Finance. The Security and Catering sector is the other focus areas with the emphasis on the provision of expansionary and acquisition funding.
The International Finance department aims to offer medium- to long-term export credit finance to foreign support South African exporters of capital goods and related services. This finance is made available by the IDC under the auspices of the South African Government’s Export Credit Support Scheme, which is administered on behalf of the Government by the Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC). The International Finance department also arranges competitive medium- to long-term loan facilities for South African importers of capital equipment, short-term export finance and local bridging finance.
The Food, Beverage and Agro Industries SBU aims to optimize the southern African region's natural resources and empower rural communities and emerging entrepreneurs. The SBU provides development finance to the agricultural, food, beverage, marine and related added value sectors in South Africa, SADC and the rest of Africa. The SBU also focuses on exploiting the latest technology and trends in terms of new crops, latest techniques and processing technologies, as well as export-driven products.
The Mining and Beneficiation SBU aims to play a leading role in the development of commercially sustainable mining and beneficiation projects in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The SBU provides financing to junior and emerging mining houses and mining-related activities such as contract mining. Other key focus areas include facilitating the acquisition of mining assets by historically disadvantaged people, developing the South African jewellery manufacturing industry and optimising value-addition beneficiation opportunities.
The Public and Private Partnerships SBU aims to facilitate sustainable economic development in South Africa and the rest of Africa in line with Nepad's objectives for social and economic upliftment. The SBU provides financial and technical assistance, as well as advisory services to encourage the private sector to participate in the provision of new and improved industrial-related infrastructure services in partnership with the public sector. The IDC invests debt, equity and/or quasi-equity in key infrastructure sectors including power, water and sanitation, telecommunications and transport.
The Venture Capital SBU aims to provide finance to technology focused entrepreneurs and small and medium sized businesses in the seed and start-up phases of their development, including finance to complete the development of a business concept or product to the point of commercial traction. The SBU provides financing to a range of industries in particular those focused on mining and exploration, electronics, information technology, biotechnology, selective engineering products, telecommunications and specialist technology, as well as all empowerment venture capital transactions.
The Tourism SBU aims to contribute to the development of the tourism industry in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The SBU provides financing to new or existing tourism businesses including hotels, guesthouses and lodges, cultural and heritage attractions, conference centers, leisure and entertainment tourism, health and wellness tourism and other bona fide tourism projects; and assists BEE partners to purchase shareholdings in viable tourism businesses.
The Franchising SBU aims to provide financing to franchised businesses through wholesale funding to franchisors for on-lending to entrepreneurs in franchised businesses either directly or through an administration/ cooperation agreement; financing. The SBU also provides financing to established franchised businesses expanding into Africa.
The Media and Motion Pictures SBU aims to develop and broaden the media industry in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The division provides financing to commercially sustainable media sector and related industry projects, assets and businesses in the areas of feature films, television, radio, documentaries, advertising and post-production operations; the publishing of books, brochures, musical books and other publications; newspapers, journals, and periodicals; recorded media; photos, engravings, postcards, forms, micropublishing; works of art or any other printed matter.
