Research publications launched

JorgeMaiaJorge MaiaThe IDC’s Department of Research and Information has released two economic research publications, one highlighting key trends in the South African economy at the macroeconomic level and the other focusing on trends in the manufacturing sector and its various sub-sectors.

The publications, Key trends in the South African economy and Trends in South African manufacturing production, employment and trade, will be released on a semester basis, specifically in the second and fourth quarters of each calendar year, including to access readers via the newsletter.

Says Jorge Maia, head of IDC’s Research and Information Department: “The publications address gaps in the market left unfilled since we stopped publishing hard copies of similar publications several years ago (then under the titles ‘Core Economic Indicators’ and ‘Trade for Growth’).  Over the years, there has been substantial demand for their continued compilation – hence the re-consideration that led to their revival in a new format, with new titles, slightly altered content and a new look.”

Key trends in the South African economy provides a synopsis of developments in the South African economy, covering trends pertaining to: gross domestic product and its various components, including fixed investment activity; manufacturing sector and sub-sectoral performance; employment; balance of payments; inflation; interest rates; capital markets; exchange rates; as well as numerous other indicators. The publication also covers selected global economic trends principally for comparative purposes.

Trends in South African manufacturing production, employment and trade provides:

  • A brief overview of trends in South Africa’s external trade (including trade balance movements, the composition of trade flows and an analysis of regional trade flows), as well as highlights of trade with the BRIC economies (i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China);
  • A brief overview of developments in the manufacturing sector and its various sub-sectors;
  • A graphical and statistical overview of the production, employment and trade trends for the 27 sub-sectors of manufacturing.
