UNCTAD launches World Investment Report
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) launched its World Investment Report 2009 (WIR)Transnational Corporations (TNCs), Agricultural Production and Development, at the IDC recently. The report is an annual study of worldwide investment trends. According to the report, prospects for global foreign direct investment (FDI) remain gloomy as a result of the worsening financial and economic crisis. FDI inflows fell from about US$1.7 trillion in 2008 to below $1.2 trillion in 2009. Recovery is expected to be slow in 2010, reaching no more than $1.4 trillion, but gathering momentum in 2011 to approach $1.8 trillion. Mr Kee Hwee Wee, Economic Affairs Officer, UNCTAD, gave an overview on the global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) trends, whilst Professor Stephen Gelb of the Edge Institute in South Africa delivered a presentation on FDI trends in South Africa and the rest of Africa.
